Before the conductor ever steps onto the podium, the room is filled with a dense, discordant cloud of sound. Dozens of musicians—some of whom have never met—are on stage together, representing strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion. And yet, in the midst of this apparent noise, a single oboe sounds a clear, unwavering pitch: an "A." Instantly, the violins, the flutes, the cellos, and the French horns begin to adjust their pegs and slides, tuning their instruments to that very same frequency.
